In 1986, this well-known gold coin was released by the Royal Perth Mint with a nugget motif. This motif had its origin from the four most famous nugget finds of Australia, which adorned this bullion coin in the late 80s. The most significant find was the Welcome Stranger Nugget. Found in 1869, this 72-kilogram nugget was lying just below the surface of a tree on the shore.
The nugget finds of that time are considered unique in Australia's history. Most gold was found in the past in the Australian state of Victoria, making this period known as the Victorian Gold Rush. During the gold rush, which lasted from 1851 to the end of the 1860s, Australia's population increased 3-fold. This period is rightly called the gold rush and heralded a new era for Australia. To this day, the country still plays a prominent role in the extraction of raw materials and the production of precious metals.
Since 1990, Australia's most famous animal - the kangaroo - has been hopping on the motif side of the coin, making it the current flagship of the renowned Perth Mint, also known as the Australian Kangaroo. The reason for the motif change was the lag in sales with the nugget motif. As with every Perth Mint coin, Queen Elizabeth II, the figurehead of the Commonwealth of Nations, graces the reverse of the coin with her portrait.
The bullion coin has a face value of $50 and is legal tender. The fineness of these gold coins is 999.9 / 1000.
